An A lookup of a domain that does not exist: rcode NXDOMAIN, with raw and values null.

Example 2 of 3 in **Special Answers** · [DNS Lookup Examples](/reference/lookup/dns/examples/) · endpoint: [DNS](/reference/lookup/dns/)

Tags: `param` `domain` · `param` `type` · `value` `no-such-domain-deepinfo-docs.com` · `value` `A`

Asks for the `A` records of `no-such-domain-deepinfo-docs.com`, a domain that is not registered.

The resolver answers `NXDOMAIN` (non-existent domain) in `rcode`, and `raw` and `values` are `null`. The request itself still returns HTTP 200: check `rcode` to tell a missing name from a name without records.

Only an `NXDOMAIN` answer proves that a name does not exist. Some DNS providers, among them zones signed with DNSSEC "compact denial of existence", answer `NOERROR` without records for names that do not exist, so an empty `NOERROR` answer alone does not prove that a name exists.
